Professional School Counseling Services

Guidance Main Page Image

My name is Mary Beth Simmons.  I am a graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor in Middle School Education and a Masters in Professional School Counseling.  I have been married for almost two years to my high school sweetheart, Casey. We have a sweet, sweet Aussie puppy named Sahara. I love the summer time, watersports, taking pictures, crocheting, reading, and traveling. Of all the things I love to do, my passion is working with kids and helping them meet their upmost potential in school and in life.

I grew up in Habersham and am so excited to have the honor of being the new school counselor at Fairview Elementary.  Each day is an adventure and presents unique challenges to ensure each child is getting exactly what they need to be successful. My goal is to build a counseling program that will create a safe and nurturing environment that inspires growth, creativity, innovation, and compassion among the entire Fairview family.

I want to make myself as available as possible to my students. I believe strongly that my job is to create community and to be a support for every single student in the school. To help reach this goal, my services include individual and group counseling and classroom guidance. Anyone can make an appointment to see me at any time. If a kid asks to see me, it is my top priority to make time for him or her. However, with a population of 450 kids, it is impossible to see each child individually at the frequency and consistency needed to create a positive working relationship. Therefore, I also utilize group counseling and classroom guidance to make sure all students’ needs are met.

My doors are always open for parents as well as students. It is so important for us to all work together to make sure our students are on the right track. Never hesitate to contact me for questions, concerns , or requests. I may not always have the answers, but I will do my best to find what is needed!

My Personal Philosophy on Counseling

I believe counselors can make a difference.

I believe each student deserves an advocate. A person who is willing to stand up and fight for the student in his or her time of need.  A person who will not just listen, but hear what he or she has to say.  A person who will validate the student’s feelings and make him or her feel important and understood. I believe that true change comes from knowing the child, by building a genuine relationship built off trust and respect.  I believe it takes a village to raise a child, especially a whole school of them. Therefore, I believe collaborationwith major stakeholders in the students’ lives is key to creating quality interventions and promoting change in all three domains, personal/social, academic, and career.

I believe one should never forget what it is like to be a child, a pre-teen, or an adolescent.  That what does not seem like a big deal to one, can mean the world to another. I believe we should never forget to treat each student as if he or she were their own person, because they are. Each person is unique and wonderful. I believe we should not treat everyone the same, but instead give each student what they need to learn, to belong, to laugh, to heal. If we ever forget each person has his or her own challenges, talents, needs, culture, and beliefs…that is when we become ineffective and useless.

I believe it is important to know where you have been to know where you are going. Therefore, I believe using quantitative and qualitative data to assess what has been done with students, individually and as a group, is necessary to ensure an effective and comprehensive counseling program. Therefore, I believe the perfect counseling program is never finished, never perfected. It is always striving to be better. To be better for each student as an individual, the students making up a classroom, the classrooms that make up the school, and the school that serves the community.

I am this. I am a counselor.

We are listeners, storytellers, advocates of change, problem solvers, secret keepers, teachers, supporters, researchers, caregivers, creators, comforters, mediators, and healers.

I not only believe counselors can make a difference, I know we do

I cannot believe the beginning of the school year is already here!!!! I can already tell that this year is going to be wonderful for all of our students.

I will meet with each class at least once a month to provide guidance lessons that will benefit all students. Some of the topics include, but are not limited to, peer/social skill building, internet and personal safety, abuse prevention, conflict management, and career awareness.

I also hope to start up various topic specific small groups that will allow students with common experiences to get together in a non-threating environment to learn and grow from one another. More infomation about the groups that will be offered will be available soon.

As always, I will be here to help kids on an individual basis whenever they need me. I am also available for parents and guardians. So feel free to contact me via phone or email anytime and I will get back with you as soon as possible!
